First Day of Fall – Autumn Activities

Posted on September 22, 2021 by aaaco

Happy First Day of Fall!  This year, the autumnal equinox is September 22 is the autumnal equinox.

There are so many things to love about fall!  Leaves changing, chilly weather, pumpkins, halloween, sweaters, and more!

All of these fun fall things make for great kid activities!  We have compiled some of our favorite ideas for activities to do, books to read, and crafts to make during this time of year!

Autumn Activities

Raking leaves:  For this indoor or outdoor activity, have some leaves scattered about.  With a small plastic rake, instruct kids to rake leaves in a pile.  If indoors, you can even tape a little square on the ground indicating where the pile should be made.

Autumn Scavenger Hunt:  Make a list of items for children to find outside (i.e., green leaf, red leaf, acorn, rock, piece of bark, etc).  Give them a bag to collect the object and a crayon or marker to check them off as they find them.  You can find a lot of ideas online.

Fall sensory bin:  First off, what is a sensory bin? A sensory bin is an occupational therapy tool that helps in a variety of ways, including improving fine motor skills and cognitive thinking.  You can make a box full of autumn-esque sensory items…varying items with different textures and colors.  Activities are endless!  Here’s an idea:  create a piece of paper or little bowls or boxes with the respective colors or object types for sorting.  There are a lot of great suggestions for fall sensory objects.

Fall Crafts

Handprint tree: The opportunities are endless with this activity.  Have kids trace their hands on leaf colored construction paper.  Cut them out, and glue or tape them to a cut out tree trunk.  You can also use finger paint and hand print or thumb print leaves on the trunk.  You can also keep it simple and have them draw a trunk and use different colors to trace their hands as leaves around the tree.

Apple Stamping Pumpkins:  An apple, orange paint, googly eyes, brown and green pipe cleaners, and paper  are all you need to make these cute little fall creatures!  Cut the apple in half, dip it in orange paint, stamp the page.  Add some googly eyes and pipe cleaners, and you have a cute little pumpkin!  You can find more information and instructions here.

See!? Autumn is full of fun!  We hope you enjoy trying some of these activities with your kids!  Enjoy this fall season!
